Ryan Gosling was Damien Chazelle’s only choice for First Man

news image

For director Damien Chazelle, there was only one choice for who he wanted to play Neil Armstrong in First Man.

While visiting the PEOPLE and EW video suite at the Toronto International Film Festival, Chazelle explained the project had been in the works with star Ryan Gosling for awhile. “Ryan and I started talking about this movie a while ago,” he said. “Back before we even made La La Land together. In my mind, I never really thought of anyone but Ryan in this role.”

Finding the right fit for Janet, Armstrong’s wife, was trickier, but Chazelle said once he heard Claire Foy (The Crown) read from a real interview Janet had once given, he was sold.

To help him prepare, Gosling turned to Armstrong’s sons and many others involved in the moon landing and his life. “Neil’s sons were very involved,” Gosling said. “A lot of people helping to add perspective and help us get to the man behind the myth. Neil and Janet and his family lived an extraordinary life.”

Chazelle reminisces about words of wisdom Gosling once shared that get to the heart of the film and the challenge of portraying Armstrong: “You think it’s a movie about someone who lands on the moon, but really it’s a movie about someone struggling to land on earth.”

‘Queer Eye’ star Jonathan Van Ness slams ‘transphobic’ critics of his Emmys dress

The stars of Netflix shows “Luke Cage” and “Queer Eye” reveal their irrational fears. (June 14)
AP

“Queer Eye” star Jonathan Van Ness is firing back at critics who chided his choice of attire at the Creative Arts Emmys Sunday.

Van Ness – who is the grooming expert on the popular Netflix series – wore a black gown with a sheer top and boots on the red carpet, before “Queer Eye” took home three Creative Emmys, including outstanding structured reality program.

A majority of social media users couldn’t get enough of the Fab Five’s glam, but not everyone was a fan. One Instagram user commented: “The guy in the dress looks like the villain in despicable me 3.”

In typical Van Ness fashion, the 31-year-old clapped back: “I look (expletive) stunning and my name is Jonathan, snap chat filter using on your Insta tiny circle private profile having self.”

The exchange was captured by the Instagram account Comments by Celebs. Van Ness continued, “Also I love all these transphobic comments in here. ‘The guy in a dress’ is insulting and for anyone that doesn’t see the implications is blind.”

He thanked his glam team on his personal account, adding “We absolutely came to slay this lewk & (expletive) a gender norm.”

The negativity towards his fashion seemed to be overwhelmed by the praise from fellow celebs.

Under his Instagram post, Reese Witherspoon commented, “Amazing.” Katie Couric added, “Congrats!!! You look absolutely gorg!!!”

Sophia Bush said, “You burned it DOWN hunney!!!!” “Crazy Rich Asians” star Constance Wu applauded, “Love this.”

“Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson commented, “CHICCCCCCC.”

Here’s what a rocket launch looks like from the view of a satellite

news image

Rocket launches are usually thrilling to watch anyway, but it’s particularly cool watching them from a satellite.

Over the weekend, Chinese private spaceflight company OneSpace launched its OS-X1 rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert.

The suborbital test is the second time the company has sent a rocket to space, and its liftoff was captured by the Jilin-1 video satellite.

The footage from space was originally posted on Weibo, and was reposted on Twitter by Dafeng Cao.

And here’s what the launch looked like from the ground.

OneSpace launched its first rocket back in May — the first privately developed rocket in China.

While the Chinese government has traditionally directed spaceflight in the country, since 2014 it’s encouraged private companies to enter the sector. A host of companies like LinkSpace, LandSpace, and of course, OneSpace, are hoping to make their mark.

OneSpace founder Shu Chang told state media that he expects 10 missions for carrier rockets in 2019, aiming for the company to be “one of the biggest small-satellite launchers in the world.”

It’s been a long, sweaty “journey,” rose lovers, but we’ve almost made it to the end of Paradise. However, before you start fantasizing about the nearly five-month break we’ll have between the Paradise finale and the start of The Bachelor (or… am I the only one who does that?), we must turn our attention to the onslaught of end-of-season breakups and breakdowns.

The week begins with a date card, and it goes to the First Couple of Paradise, Jordan and Jenna. The card instructs them to get “camera ready,” and when they arrive at the date, this gentleman is waiting for them.

Yep, it’s time for some fake “engagement photos!” Jordan, of course, is happier than a Florida-based Wilhelmina model in a Macy’s menswear circular, but Jenna finds the whole thing pretty stressful. “I’m nervous about how I feel about Jordan,” she confesses. “I’m nervous about being nervous.” And that’s before the photographer asks her to change into this:

The move from fake engagement photos to fake wedding photos has Jenna in anxiety overdrive. “I’m scared,” she tells Jordan. “I just want to know that you’re here, all the way.” The male model, who has developed into a dream boyfriend over the past few weeks, assures Jenna that if she left him, “there would be no more romance.” Awwww. She LOVES it.

“I can actually picture a pretty healthy, fun relationship in the future with him,” says Jenna, before getting slammed by a wave and nearly losing her borrowed wedding dress entirely.

But just as Jordan can see his happily-ever-after Paradise ending with Jenna on the horizon, who walks down the steps but this guy:

A+++ on the chyron work there, Team Paradise. Amazing stuff. But the only influence Robby seems to have on his new castmates is to make them feel a mild wave of disgust. “Why is Robby Hayes here?” asks a clearly skeeved-out Cassandra. “Every single girl here knows his reputation. It’s not a good one.” Shushanna, on the other hand, is ready to “double-tap that.”

One by one, the women tell Robby that they’re in relationships and therefore off-limits, though Jenna is a bit more colorful with her language. “Jordan might peel your skin off and cook it,” she informs Robby with a throaty chuckle. Indeed, once Jordan finds out that the social media influencer asked Jenna out, he decides to go talk to his rival — but the “Ken-doll showdown” we were promised in the promos turns out to be a fairly polite conversation. Things are so solid with him and Jenna, says Jordan, that if Robby took her out “it would be a waste of a date card.”

Hearing this, Robby moves on to his next best (a.k.a. only) other option: Shushanna. And that’s when things get [cue the haunted house sounds] spoooooooky. First, a bottle of champagne (that in no way was left out in the hot, hot sun and then shaken vigorously by a Paradise intern) unexpectedly explodes on Wells at the bar. And then, during Robby and Shushanna’s outdoor dinner, fruit starts falling from the trees.

Oh, the horror! Yeah, well… it’s week 6, and producers still have four hours to fill, so what did we expect? (Next: Did Kendall seriously just break up with Grocery Joe?)

Church sex abuse: Kentucky attorney general wants to investigate state Catholic dioceses

news image

CLOSE

Demonstrators gathered outside the Cathedral of the Assumption in downtown Louisville to protest the Catholic Church’s handling of child sex abuse.
Nikki Boliaux, Courier Journal

The Kentucky attorney general will seek the Legislature’s permission to form a statewide grand jury to investigate Kentucky’s Catholic dioceses in line with last month’s damning report on Pennsylvania Catholic churches.

That report showed church leaders protected more than 300 “predator priests” for decades in six Pennsylvania dioceses because they were more interested in safeguarding the church and the abusers than in ministering to victims.

Deputy Attorney General J. Michael Brown said his office has been in contact with Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro and that his staff will “in the near future” draft legislation to put to lawmakers in Frankfort.

“We are working to secure justice for individual survivors who have reached out to the Attorney General’s office,” Brown said in a statement.

In response, the Archdiocese told the Courier Journal that “we have always cooperated with the authorities in our response to sexual abuse and will continue to do so.”

The attorney general’s announcement followed a protest at the steps of the Cathedral of Assumption in downtown Louisville, in which about two-dozen Catholic sex abuse victims and their advocates gathered to condemn the Catholic Church.

The group, which urged the AG to investigate dioceses here, demanded the Archdiocese of Louisville take 16 steps to rectify the legacy of widespread abuse.

The protest was one of nine held around the nation in the wake of Pennsylvania’s grand jury report.

The local protesters, who included parishioners, victims, social workers and ex-Catholics, said both the Archdiocese of Louisville and the Catholic Church as a whole have failed to support victims of sex abuse and to hold accountable complicit church staff.

Some waved signs demanding transparency, advocating for feminist theology or calling for parishioners to “step up and be on the side of truth.”

Frank Diebold, a victim of abuse as an altar boy, drew a contrast between the way Papa John’s handled its leader and how the Vatican is handling an accused cardinal.

Papa John’s ousted their namesake and founder, John Schnatter, shortly after executives learned he used the n-word in a conference call.

“And the Catholic Church can’t get rid of a cardinal,” Diebold said. “Who’s got more integrity? The pizza shop or the Catholic Church?”

The Louisville Archdiocese paid $25.7 million in the early 2000s to 240 people who said they were sexually abused by priests, religious brothers and church employees.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) says the archdiocese has not done enough to rectify those crimes and issued the following demands:

  • Stop using euphemisms like “inappropriate behavior” when speaking about sexual abuse of children, which includes rape and sodomy.
  • Fire employees who knew of the cover-up of sexually abusive priests.
  • Severely discipline any priests who knew of sexual abuse taking place.
  • Cut off all financial support to priests convicted of crimes.
  • Appoint victims of priest sexual abuse to the Archdiocese of Louisville board that reviews allegations. (Archbishop Joseph Kurtz said the board until recently has had a victim member.)
  • Post the names and assignments of credibly accused priests
  • Amend the sex-abuse training document used by all employees and volunteers who work with children, which scarcely references priests as possible abusers.
  • Stop requiring victims to agree to confidentiality agreements to receive settlements.
  • Invite victims to meet with seminarians and new priests.
  • Put more women in prominent roles.
  • Establish support groups for victims.
  • Explain to the public in greater detail what happens when the church commits priests to a “life of prayer and penance,” a form of dismissal from ministry following credible sex abuse allegations.
  • List dates and locations of efforts showing what the archdiocese has done to help victims heal.
  • Provide a complete list of settlements paid since 1990, including names of abusive priests and settlement amounts.
  • Launch a speaker’s forum at Bellarmine University featuring the foremost authorities on sex abuse within the Catholic church.
  • Commission a statue that commemorates victims.

Cal Pfeiffer, leader of the Louisville chapter of SNAP, said at the protest that walls need to come down between church leadership and victims.

“Forgiving is a tough concept, especially when some of the people that need to be forgiven don’t even ask for it, don’t reach out for forgiveness,” he said. “Forgiveness is also critical for victims and survivors in their healing. It would sure help if there was something to latch on to where they feel the church, Archdiocese, the pope are really behind them.”

The group wants Kurtz to respond by the end of this month.

Kurtz on Monday released a statement saying that some suggestions he heard are already in place, others require action on a broader scale and a number of them are good to consider for the future.

He invited Catholics to join him in a prayer and fasting on Oct. 5 and said he will release a report in October that chronicles how the Archdiocese has handled sexual abuse.

He wrote that he also is traveling this week to Washington, D.C., to meet with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, where the group will discuss how best to report bishop misconduct and resolve complaints.

“I agree with the victim survivors and advocates that the truth of sexual abuse by priests and other Church leaders needs to be faced squarely. Silence is not the answer,” he wrote in an email. “There may have been judgement calls made over the years that individuals disagree with, and I respect their right to disagree.”

He said he has consistently and promptly reported abuse to authority, removed offenders and communicated with local parishes.

Opinion: Catholics deserve better than the excuses offered by the archbishop

He noted that a third-party audit recently found the diocese compliant with the “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People,” created by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2002. Among other things, the charter calls on churches to create safe spaces for children, promptly and effectively respond to allegations, cooperate with civil authorities and help survivors heal.

Since 2003, more than 48,000 volunteers and employees who work with children have undergone background checks and completed a workshop on ways to spot abuse.

“It’s a need for us as a community to always repair and renew ourselves,” Kurtz said. “The Church of Jesus Christ is one that requires us to seek to protect one another and that is my intent.”

How much better will Tiger Woods be in 2019?

news image

NEWTON SQUARE, Pa. – Tiger Woods got better in each of the first three FedEx Cup Playoff events.

He had his first real chance to win one Monday in the final round of the BMW Championship and came up a little short with the putter.

He also played his way into the Tour Championship with plenty of breathing room and goes into East Lake ranked 20th in the standings. Look at the quality of players just outside the top 30, Jordan Spieth among them, and there you’ll see what an amazing year this continues to be for Woods.

“To make the Ryder Cup team and get back to East Lake, that was a pretty big goal at the beginning of the year,” Woods said. “To be able to accomplish that is something I’m very proud of.”

Woods shot 5-under 65 to finish strong at Aronimink Golf Club, where he was T-6 for the week after shooting 17-under 263. His swing was worthy of a multi-shot win but he again missed key birdie chances throughout the week.

Even though Woods prefers tougher conditions this is the second time over the last month he’s nearly gotten it done in a birdie-fest, including the PGA Championship at Bellerive.

The greens were even more gettable in Philadelphia due to heavy rain that pushed the tournament to a Monday finish, and Woods was up for it. He was much better than a T-40 showing in New Jersey and sharper still from his T-24 at TPC Boston.

He opened with an 8-under 62 in scorching hot conditions and finished on a dreary, gray Monday morning in his bright red Nike sweater.

Woods has a consistent swing now, one he’s used to pummel fairways and greens over the past three weeks across the East Coast. Switching his driver shaft going into the Northern Trust was the last piece of the equipment puzzle, he said. Finally he was comfortable with his new fused back and new swing and in the playoffs he found all the specs to match.

This was a good week for Woods, who was named to the Ryder Cup team and will have some time to rest ahead of the Tour Championship and matches at Le Golf National. Atlanta and Paris were very far away when Woods began the year practicing at home in Jupiter, Fla.

He got there with a swing he cobbled together throughout the season and racked up six top-10 finishes as a result. The process led to setbacks, but he got better each month.

Woods is at the finish line now. A long year is over and he’s ready to reap the rewards with his American teammates, hopefully do something that hasn’t been done in 25 years ( a U.S. win on foreign soil). Then he’ll have around three months off and it’s already tempting to wonder how much better he can get in 2019.

All year he’s been hinting at it, slipping in comments about how hard this year has been. As the leaders played their final few holes Monday at Aronimink, he gave one of his most telling answers yet about his prospects for next season.

“I need to start really lifting and getting after it,” Woods said of his offseason. “Playing every single week, it seems like every single day is maintenance at this point. War of attrition. What you do in the offseason is what allows you to maintain it through the year, especially on the backside of the year, and I really didn’t train for all this because I didn’t know how much I was going to be playing. I was just trying to play.”

For a while it looked like the BMW might be cut short much earlier than planned.

Sunday’s forecast was bleak, the sky was dark and future forecasts didn’t look much better. Maintenance crews tried to maintain something playable, just to get through the week. The rain didn’t fall quite as heavily and through hard work and some luck we were able to see this thing through to completion.

It was still sprinkling on and off by the time Woods finished up Monday afternoon, but the bulk of the storm had passed and there were brighter days ahead. Gwk

England v Switzerland: Dele Alli to miss match with muscle strain

news image

Kane has scored 14 goals in 14 appearances under Southgate

TEAM NEWS

England forward Harry Kane is to be rested by manager Gareth Southgate for Tuesday’s friendly against Switzerland.

The Tottenham striker, 25, who scored six goals and won the Golden Boot at the World Cup in the summer, has started 61 matches in all competitions since the start of last season.

“I thought this is a good opportunity to do it,” Southgate said.

Kane’s Spurs team-mate Dele Alli has withdrawn from the squad with a minor muscle strain.

England face Switzerland in Leicester after three straight defeats and have never lost four consecutive matches.

As many as nine changes are expected from the side that started the 2-1 Nations League loss to Spain, with Eric Dier confirmed as captain of a team set to feature the likes of Jack Butland, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Fabian Delph, James Tarkowski and Danny Welbeck.

“Harry falls in the category in which we have several players where we have to watch how much they play,” said Southgate.

“It was a short break with no pre-season and everybody was back earlier than I am sure everybody would have expected for club matches, although that is entirely understandable.

“We talked a bit after the World Cup about the demands of the modern player. Everybody has got to play a part in that but the clubs own the player and they have got to do the right thing for themselves.”

Southgate has brought in Leicester’s Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray from the Under-21s for the Switzerland game.

Left-back Chilwell, 21, and forward Gray, 22, could both make international debuts on their home ground.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw left the camp earlier following the concussion he suffered in a nasty collision with Spain’s Dani Carvajal at Wembley on Saturday.

He had reported to St George’s Park for monitoring but was released back to his club after showing no ill effects.

England’s defeat by Spain was their first match since losing the third-place play-off match to Belgium at the World Cup finals in Russia.

Has starvation become a weapon of war?

One child living in a warzone may die of hunger every minute.

That’s the startling assessment from the UK-based charity Save The Children.

The group released a report on the use of hunger as a weapon in some of the world’s worst conflicts.

It said 4.5 million children under five will need treatment for severe malnutrition before the end of the year. That’s a 20 percent increase from 2016.

Tens of thousands of children could die in Yemen, Afghanistan, and South Sudan.

But the biggest number of fatalities is expected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where 300,000 children are at risk.

Save the Children warned starvation is increasingly used as a weapon with warring parties blocking food and medicine – leading to devastating consequences.

Under the Statute of the International Criminal Court, intentionally starving civilians is a war crime.

So, what should be done to deal with the crisis?

Presenter: Hoda Abdel-Hamid

Sarah Jessica Parker agrees ‘Sex and the City’ was ‘tone deaf’ on diversity

news image

Fashionably late as ever, Sarah Jessica Parker has come to a conclusion most of us came to years ago: Sex and the City didn’t age as gracefully as its cast.

The main actress behind the beloved, decades-old show even went as far to call it “tone deaf” when looking back on the show with the hindsight of today’s social politics.

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Parker discussed the major issues with reviving Sex and the City for the modern zeitgeist.

“You couldn’t make it today because of the lack of diversity on screen,” Parker said during the Deauville Film Festival, referring to the all-white cast of main characters. “I personally think it would feel bizarre.”

Of course, in the age of reboots (and in light of the two recent spinoff films), talk of a TV revival has been swarming around Sex and the City like flies to trash on a hot New York day.

But a revival in its previous form seems all but impossible at this point. The ongoing feud between Parker and her previous co-star Kim Cattrall pretty much put all those rumors to bed. There’s also the tiny problem of Cynthia Nixon having moved onto politics.

Finally, the nixing of the third movie felt like the final nail in the coffin for the HBO classic.

But now it seems Parker feels free to air her very reasonable criticisms toward the show that defined her career. Because, once heralded as a trailblazer in women’s representation, Sex and the City carries lots of questionable baggage with how we define progress for women on screen now.

Yup, this is still not what New York City actually looks like.

Yup, this is still not what New York City actually looks like.

“I don’t know that you could do it with a different cast,” she said. “I think that’s radical and interesting, but you can’t pretend it’s the same.”

Parker tried to imagine what an all-new look for Sex and the City group would look like, both as promising change but also an ultimate challenge:

“It wouldn’t be a reboot as I understand it. If you came back and did six episodes, you’d have to acknowledge the city is not hospitable to those same ideas,” she said.

“You’d look like you were generationally removed from reality, but it would be certainly interesting to see four diverse women experiencing NYC their way … It would be interesting and very worthwhile exploring, but it couldn’t be the same.”

All in all though, Parker seemed comfortable considering what the show — which became nearly synonymous with her own personal brand — would be like if it grew beyond her. Though it’s fair to say HBO’s Girls, the arguable millennial successor to what Sex and the City started, still never moved beyond its unbearably white perspective of the diverse metropolis.

But even the most fashionable shows go out of fashion eventually. And maybe it’s time to put this one in the back of the closet along with those out-of-season Manolos.
