Teen activist, who wanted to stem violence, fatally shot in Chicago

news image

For Delmonte Johnson, the violence he wanted to eradicate from the city of Chicago ultimately took his life.

Johnson, 19, was shot in the chest and stomach before being taken to the hospital, where he later died Wednesday, TV station WLS reported. The teen worked with youth advocacy group GoodKids MadCity, which was formed after the February mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

Johnson’s brother Devirgo Johnson said the shooting occurred as Delmonte was playing basketball after dropping another sibling off at practice, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

“I laid next to my brother when he was dying in my hands,” Devirgo said, according to the paper. “I knew he was leaving me. But he’s still with me.”

Chicago police had two people of interest in custody Thursday, the Sun Times reported.

At a vigil, Johnson’s mother Onique Walker spoke about her son’s activist work and passion for sports. She said he was about to begin a Christian youth fundraiser.

“I’m going to miss my baby,” she said. “Anything you asked Delmonte to do, Delmonte was there.”

GoodKids MadCity co-founder Carlil Pittman told the Sun Times he knew Johnson through their church and that Johnson later joined the anti-gun violence group.

David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland shooting and anti-gun violence activist, tweeted his sympathy for Johnson’s family, amplifying news of his death.

“My heart goes out to Delmonte and his family,” Hogg tweeted. “Together we will end this.”

Vuelta a Espana: Simon Yates retakes leaders jersey with stage 14 victory

news image

Yates first took the lead after stage nine

Britain’s Simon Yates retook the Vuelta a Espana lead with a spectacular summit victory on stage 14.

Jesus Herrada, who moved ahead of Yates to take the red jersey on Thursday, dropped away on a day that featured almost 3,000m of vertical climbing.

Mitchelton-Scott rider Yates, 26, emerged strongest from an elite group of eight on the steep Alto les Praeres.

He burst decisively clear in the final kilometre, leaving behind rivals Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde.

The Englishman is now 20 seconds clear of second-placed Valverde and 25 seconds ahead of the Spaniard’s Movistar team leader Quintana in third.

Yates, who first took the lead at this year’s race after finishing ninth on stage nine, said: “I’m a bit happier now, I feel more like I deserve it this time.

“I gave everything I could, I’m very happy,” he added. “I chose my moment really well and didn’t look back until it flattened out a little. There was a bit of a gap, so I just gave everything to the line.”

Saturday’s 171km race from Cistierna in Castile and Leon had Herrada struggling well before front of the race reached the foot of the final ascent – the day’s third category-one climb.

There were gradients of around 17% as Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatkowski, the sole remaining member of the breakaway, was swept up and first Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk broke clear.

The race’s main rivals for overall victory attacked and counter-attacked behind, before Miguel Angel Lopez and Quintana opened up what appeared to be a decisive gap.

But suddenly they seemed to tire and no rider was able to answer when Yates broke clear, with Lopez finishing second and Valverde placing third, both two seconds behind him.

Cofidis’ Spanish rider Herrada finished nine minutes and 16 seconds back.

Sunday’s stage 15 features a third consecutive summit finish as the riders cross 178.2km from Ribera de Arriba to Lagos de Covadonga in Asturias.

Global climate protests call for united action as talks stall

news image

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in major international cities to demand governmental action on climate change as talks to reinvigorate the Paris Agreement continued in Thailand

The “Rise for Climate” protest movement swept over the globe on Saturday, with more than 1,000 events organised worldwide – from Bangkok to San Francisco.

In the Thai capital, where talks at the United Nations’ regional headquarters began earlier this week, dozens of fishermen and labourers whose livelihoods are threatened by rising sea levels brought examples of their  produce, including crabs and shrimp, while holding banners calling on delegates to take action.

“I came here today to ask the government to put coastal erosion on the national agenda,” 58-year-old fisherwoman Aree Kongklad told AFP news agency.

UN chief Antonio Guterres acknowledged that too little is being done, calling on negotiators in Bangkok to “show the ambition” needed to address the issues.

Dozens of demonstrators turned out at a demonstration in Lima, the capital of Peru, holding signs calling on people to unite for the climate and performing street theatre that depicted the death of nature as a result of climate change.

Sizeable crowds also showed in European cities. Organisers in France claimed that roughly 115,000 took part in nationwide rallies. If true, it would make the “Rise for Climate” marches the largest environmental protest in the country’s history.

“This is the biggest day of climate action in France, it’s proof that the citizens are ready to demand commitments from our elected officials after a catastrophic summer when it comes to the climate,” said Clemence Dubois, the France campaigner for 350.org, a group whose website says it uses online and grassroots organising to “to oppose new coal, oil and gas projects”.

Another 10,000 rallied in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, according to police. About 1,300 others marched in front of the European Parliament in Brussels.

Progress stalled

The Paris Agreement, which was adopted in December 2015 by 196 state parties, calls on signatories to report their progress in battling climate change to the UN.

The landmark agreement deals with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020.

The aim is to limit global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

But US President Donald Trump, whose country is of one of the world’s largest polluters, announced in August 2017 that he would withdraw from the agreement in order to renegotiate its terms. The move caused global outrage.

The talks in Bangkok aim to create a draft legal framework for limiting global temperature rises that can be presented to ministers and heads of state at a final round of discussions in Poland in December.

Delegates began meeting on Tuesday, but there has been little progress, according to reports.

Multiple sources told AFP on Saturday that the US is stalling UN talks over how to fund poorer nations in the battle against climate change.

“The US is no longer playing the game but it’s still setting the rules,” said a senior climate negotiator, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Amazon confirms plans to open checkout-free Go store in New York

news image

Brace yourselves New Yorkers: You’re getting an Amazon Go store.

Amazon confirmed to CNN that it plans to open one of its checkout-free grocery stores of the future in New York after several job listings for positions such as a store manager were posted online.

Amazon opened the first Go store in Seattle in January of this year. Hailed as the store of the future, customers use their phones to scan their Amazon Go app at the turnstiles located at the entrance.

Then, the rest is like magic.

You simply take what you want to purchase from off the shelves and put it in your bag. Amazon uses its “Walk Out” technology which consists of a whole bunch of cameras and sensors located within the shelves and installed in the ceilings to track each item you’ve picked up.

All your “purchased” items are totaled up and charged via the app. You walk out of the Go store and never have to deal with check-out lines or moody cashiers.

Since opening the original Go store in Seattle, Amazon has opened two more in the city. The company is expected to open Go stores in Chicago and San Francisco as well.

Retailers aren’t sitting still and letting Amazon walk all over them. Walmart is reportedly working on its own cashier-less Amazon Go store competitors and might use Microsoft technology to accomplish it.

Mashable has reached out to Amazon for confirmation and for more details on

Debbie Gibson and Robert Gant have a Wedding of Dreams on Hallmark

news image

It’s appropriate that Hallmark’s Wedding of Dreams is a sequel, because, in addition to serving as a second movie — following up on 2016’s hugely popular Summer of Dreams — it also offers a second chance for its lead character, Debbie Taylor.

In many ways, and in many other ways not, the character’s life resembles that of the person who portrays her: pop star Debbie Gibson. Taylor sings all of the same songs that made Gibson famous starting in the late-1980s, she is mistaken for fellow singer (and friend) Tiffany, and more. After losing her money, her record label, and boyfriend, things turned around for Debbie — Taylor, not Gibson — when she met Noah, played by Queer as Folk and 13 Reasons Why’s Robert Gant. Now settled into her job as a public school music teacher, she’s engaged and planning her wedding, and, unexpectedly, her music career is getting a second wind, especially after she’s invited to perform on an American Idol-like show.

There were never any original plans for a sequel, but credit Gibson for this latest movie — she’s the one who had another, well, Dream in mind.

“The Hallmark audience is the same audience that grew up with me, and I think they’re enjoying watching me play me, essentially, and I’ve been enjoying it as well and incorporating music,” the 48-year-old tells EW while on tour with Tiffany in Singapore. “I did feel like delving deeper into the relationship and that fear of really planting roots, which, for showbiz women is a reality; we’re very nomadic and free-spirited and it’s like, oh my god, I want this but do I really know how to live a normal life while being my eccentric, creative, road-gypsy self? So I thought that was a really fun thing to explore.”

“She’s a pop star… that’s not a common thing that couples have to deal with,” Gant says of the dynamic this time around. “Things are out of balance … she’s so focused on this life [with Noah] that she’s not honoring another very essential part of her, which is the performer, the artist, and the one who has millions of fans. So we get to watch the journey of how those things can reconcile.”

Which means, while she is away performing, he ends up doing the majority of the wedding planning — not something typically seen in TV and movies. Turns out, it’s another case of art imitating life.

“The thing is, me in real life and me as Debbie Taylor didn’t really have that whole fantasy of doing the cake tasting,” Gibson admits. “Seeing Robert in that situation was really fun. He’s really more of the romantic, which is really sweet and is why my character really falls for him in the first one.… For my character who’s in showbiz, it’s very grounding and romantic to have that because she doesn’t really know how it works and is slightly petrified of it all.”

It’s not lost on Taylor, though, how great of a guy she has in Noah, and she gets her own turn in the romantic spotlight, serenading him at their wedding with a Gibson/Taylor classic, “Lost in Your Eyes,” the first single off her 1989 hit album Electric Youth.

“I think because I read it in the script, I had a certain level of detachment from the actual moment of doing it, but when it was happening — and because it’s television we had to shoot it multiple times, from different angles, and every time she sings it it’s like it’s the first time,” Gant explains, “but I had this idea flash through my mind that, wow, she has performed in Madison Square Garden, in front of huge crowds, and has millions of people around the world, and she’s singing it just to me — intentionally — it’s all directed to me in this moment. It was very surreal and cool… it was pretty amazing to watch how masterful she is at her craft.”

And while the happy newlywed couple is riding off into the sunset, this Dream may not be over just yet. While there, of course, could be a Honeymoon of Dreams (she mentions Paris a few times in the movie), Gibson has a much bigger idea in mind.

“I think it could be a series. With the kids and the music and there not being a Glee on the air anymore, there’s such an opportunity for a downhome, romantic story line with my character jetting off to do showbiz stuff and my kids making music,” she says. “We could be putting out original music every week.”

Case in point, Gibson wrote a song for one of the students to sing, and while we hear just the hook in the movie, two of those young actors — Mamie Laverock and Sean Thomas — recorded “Take the Risk,” which you can see them perform in the exclusive video below.

“I think there’s a big opportunity here. I’ve always wanted to do TV if it was something that I really wanted to get out of bed for every day. I’ve had a very charmed career where I’m able to do things that I love, so that would be a really worthwhile reason to work crazy hours.”

Perhaps, even, there will be a chance for Gant, who studied tap (in fifth grade, he danced with Bob Hope for a USO show!) and sang in several a capella groups and performed in musical theatre, to get in on the action. Sonny and Cher for a new generation, maybe? It doesn’t seem out of the question.

“She’ll start singing something and I am immediately jumping in and harmonizing with her,” Gant says of their time on set, “which I think is sort of indicative of us as friends and the couple we’re playing, looking for that harmony.”

You can watch them create that harmony in Wedding of Dreams, premiering Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. ET on Hallmark.

Kanye West shouts at reporter over Kim K, Tyson Beckford feud question at Ralph Lauren event

news image

Warning: Asking Kanye West about that Kim Kardashian/Tyson Beckford feud from last month may get you kicked out of a fashion event.

The rapper, who was attending Ralph Lauren’s 50th anniversary fashion show and party Friday evening, fired off at a reporter and demanded that she get kicked out of the event after being asked something he didn’t want to hear.

TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter report the blow-up was caused by the reporter asking a question about Beckford, who was also attending the event, and wife Kardashian’s online squabble in early August.

Beckford commented on a photo of Kardashian at the time with some choice words about the reality star’s appearance. When Kardashian responded, social media users labeled her clap back at his body-shaming comments Wednesday “homophobic.”

In a video captured by TMZ, West attempts to get the reporter thrown out of the event by talking to what looks like an event organizer on the red carpet.

“She needs to get kicked out right now, or I’m leaving. Right now,” he demanded. “She has to leave, Ralph Lauren should not have people asking questions like this.”

Turning to the reporter, West says, “Ralph Lauren would be very ashamed that you asked that trash question.”

The reporter then looks at West, saying, “I apologize.”

“No, you have to go,” West retorts before walking away.

US Open 2018: Jamie Murray and Bethanie Mattek-Sands win mixed doubles title

news image

Murray and Mattek-Sands were competing together for the first time at this tournament

Jamie Murray successfully defended his US Open mixed doubles title by coming from behind to win a tight final.

The Briton and American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands beat Poland’s Alicja Rosolska and Croat Nikola Mektic on a match tie-break 2-6 6-3 11-9.

The win gives Murray a fourth Grand Slam mixed doubles title and is his sixth overall.

It is Mattek-Sands’ eighth Slam title but first since a career-threatening knee injury at Wimbledon in 2017.

The pair were competing together for the first time and were well supported by Mattek-Sands’ home crowd.

She was in tears after the winning point and cried again when asked about her comeback from injury in her on-court post-match interview.

Murray then led the crowd in singing happy birthday to his mother Judy who was watching in his support box.

Swiss Martina Hingis, with whom Murray won the New York title in 2017, was also watching alongside the Scot’s team.

“I have got a good talent for picking the best partner,” Murray said.

“I have had an amazing two weeks. Things went against us and we had to fight hard to get back into the match.”

Murray and Mattek-Sands struggled in the first set, twice losing the American’s serve, but claimed the only break in the second to level.

The British-American pair trailed 4-1 in the match tie-break before fighting back with Mattek-Sands hitting a brilliant lob to get back on serve.

They failed to convert three match points later in the tie-break before Murray put away a volley on the fourth to win the title.

“I got a little emotional out there,” Mattek-Sands said. “Going from not being able to get myself out of bed last year to winning this final.

“I don’t care what anyone tells you, you can do anything if you put your mind to it.”

Armenian children facing deportation can stay in the Netherlands

news image

The Netherlands has suspended a planned deportation of two Armenian children whose bid for asylum was rejected, in a case that has drawn nationwide attention.

The surprising U-turn came after the siblings – 12-year-old Lili and her brother Howick, 13 – went into hiding ahead of their expected deportations on Saturday.

In a statement, the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security said that while authorities in the Netherlands and Armenia had worked hard to arrange a secure situation for the pair in Armenia, “recent developments” meant “the welfare and security of the children can no longer be sufficiently guaranteed”.

“The state secretary has therefore, taking everything into account, decided that the children can remain in the Netherlands,” Saturday’s statement added.

Going into hiding

Earlier on Saturday, Maarten Molenbeek, spokesperson for the justice ministry, said the children had ran away from a foster home overnight, while police appealed for the public’s help in locating them.

Police reported in the afternoon that the siblings had been found and were being questioned, but would be returned to foster care.

The children have been living with foster parents since their mother, Armina Hambartsjumian, lost a decade-long legal battle for asylum and was sent to Armenia without them.

It was not immediately clear whether Hambartsjumian, who was deported to Armenia last year, would be allowed to return to join her children.

The siblings, who came to the Netherlands in 2008, have reportedly never visited Armenia and do not speak Armenian.

A court in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, on Friday rejected a final bid to block their deportations.

The Dutch government faced mounting disapproval of its original refusal to let the siblings remain in the country.

Mark Harbers, state secretary for justice and security defended the government’s position on Friday, but acknowledged it was a tough decision to deport them.

“Everybody feels emotional about this; that also applies to somebody in the cabinet like me,” Harbers said.

“But at the same time you have to keep looking at all the facts that play a role.”

Where Tesla’s prototype electric Semi — a battery-powered long-haul truck — will go next is anyone’s guess. But in recent days, Elon Musk’s truck was spotted in Salt Lake City, Utah.

A woman who said she’s a Tesla employee posted on her Instagram Friday pictures of the truck and an inside view of the big-rig. She wrote that it was only at the service center for an hour and “they wouldn’t tell us where it was going after this.”

Electrek has been tracking the vehicle as it winds its way through the U.S. Previous sightings in recent weeks have included Colorado, Illinois, Arkansas, and Iowa. The trip appears to be a way to show off the electric truck’s range and cross-country capabilities. The truck is based in Nevada but it’s clearly testing out routes farther and farther away from its home base.

We reached out to Tesla for more information on this mysterious road trip. Tesla’s website says the Semi can go from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds and has a range of 300 miles. The expected base price is $150,000.

Also, this week Walmart upped its order of the electric trucks for its fleet. An additional 30 trucks were ordered to join others operating in Canada for a new distribution center opening in 2022, according to Electrek.

The truck is supposed to start production in 2019.
