It turns out the Air Force isn’t quite sure what to make of Elon Musk’s pot smoking either.
No, the military hasn’t launched a formal investigation into the SpaceX CEO. But it is trying to figure out how to respond to Musk’s latest antics.
After setting the internet ablaze following an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, which featured Musk taking a single hit off a spliff, questions have been swirling about whether or not said hit would have any negative consequences for the man or his businesses.
These questions kicked into high gear Friday, when a Fox Business reporter tweeted that the Air Force was looking into Musk’s actions, potentially putting his government security clearance at risk. The Air Force later clarified that while it’s evaluating the situation, there is not, in fact, an investigation.
“It’s inaccurate that there is an investigation. We’ll need time to determine the facts and the appropriate process to handle the situation,” a spokesperson told The Verge.
Pretty much everything Musk says or does makes headlines, so it’s not surprising that his momentary joint-smoking on Rogan’s podcast is quickly turning into its own news cycle, too. Despite the fact marijuana is legal in California, and that all the pot-shaming really isn’t cool anyway, Musk’s actions could have serious implications for SpaceX — at least in theory.
That’s because SpaceX has contracts with the U.S. Air Force, which has markedly different stance on marijuana than Musk. As others have pointed out, people with security clearances are prohibited from using marijuana; partaking in any way could lose you your clearance. Which brings us back to Musk.
The fact that the SpaceX CEO openly smoked while on Rogan’s show could potentially create problems for the company’s government contracts, the thinking goes.
Of course, the Air Force hasn’t actually said anything of the sort yet. It’s only confirmed that it’s aware of the situation and attempting to figure out a response. Regardless, it seems this could turn into yet another major buzzkill for Musk.

A New Yorker article exposing sexual misconduct allegations against CBS CEO Leslie Moonves is set to publish. That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter. Veuer’s Sam Berman has the full story. Buzz60
Six more women accused CBS CEO Leslie Moonves of sexual misconduct and intimidation in a bombshell report published Sunday by The New Yorker, as reports swirl that the 68-year-old corporate chief is in negotiations to leave the company.
Multiple news outlets, including The Los Angeles Times and CNN, say he’s expected to step down by Monday.
The investigative report by Pulitzer Prize winner Ronan Farrow includes allegations that Moonves forced oral sex, exposed himself, committed violent acts and derailed careers in incidents that occurred from the 1980s to the early 2000s. It follows a previous Farrow report from late July that featured accusations from six other women.
In the new report, the accusers, who give their names, describe a range of damning actions.
Phyllis Golden-Gottlieb, who was a Moonves colleague at Lorimar-Telepictures studio in the 1980s, describes an incident in 1986 in which she says Moonves forced her to perform oral sex.
She says Moonves suggested going to lunch on a work day, but instead drove to a secluded area where he “grabbed my head and he took it all the way down onto his penis, and pushed his penis into my mouth.”
In later incidents, she says Moonves left his office and returned not wearing pants and that he threw her against the wall. Other women describe forced kissing, groping, propositions, with many of the encounters taking place during work time, as well as later efforts to harm careers.
Moonves, in a statement to The New Yorker, acknowledged three encounters before his tenure at CBS, but said they were consensual and added: “The appalling accusations in this article are untrue. … And I have never used my position to hinder the advancement or careers of women. … I can only surmise they are surfacing now for the first time, decades later, as part of a concerted effort by others to destroy my name, my reputation, and my career.”
In a statement sent to USA TODAY on Sunday, CBS Corporation says: “CBS takes these allegations very seriously. Our Board of Directors is conducting a thorough investigation of these matters, which is ongoing.”
CBS began an investigation, hiring two outside law firms, shortly after the allegations in the original New Yorker story about Moonves. Speculation about his departure rose last week with news reports that the executive was in negotiations to leave with a potential payout of $100 million.
The accusations and investigation take place in a time of corporate ferment, as CBS and Moonves have been waging a legal battle to prevent a merger with another media giant, Viacom. There has been much speculation that the fate of Moonves could affect that matter.
SportsPulse: USA TODAY Sports’ Jarrett Bell says it’s great that Colin Kaepernick is the face of a new Nike campaign, but Kaepernick deserves to be on an NFL team. USA TODAY
NFL players’ protests weren’t widespread in Sunday’s first games, but the demonstrations had not died out in Week 1.
Miami Dolphins wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson became the first players of the 2018 regular season to kneel in protest during the national anthem when they did so before Sunday’s contest against the Tennessee Titans. Dolphins defensive end Robert Quinn also raised a fist during the song.
Stills and Wilson both kneeled in the preseason and said they planned to continue to do so in the regular season. Stills said he would consider stopping if former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who began kneeling in 2016 as a means to protest racial inequality and police brutality, and former 49ers safety Eric Reid were signed by an NFL team.
Both Kaepernick and Reid are pursuing separate collusion grievances against the league, with each one alleging that teams worked together to keep him off the field.
My Brothers @kstills and @ithinkisee12 continue to show their unwavering strength by fighting for the oppressed! They have not backed down, even when attacked and intimidated. Their courage will move the world forward!
Stills, who began following Kaepernick’s lead two years ago by kneeling, told The New York Times last week that criticism of players’ protests were misguided.
“It shouldn’t be this complicated,” Stills told The Times. “Instead of people saying, yeah, let’s do this, let’s make change, let’s make our country a better place, it’s like, no, don’t do this then, this isn’t the right place, you don’t like the police.”
Despite the arrival of the regular season, the NFL is at a standstill on its policy for the national anthem. In May, NFL owners voted to approve a rule requiring players to either stand on the field for the anthem or remain in the locker room. But the league put that policy on hold as it entered into discussions with the NFL Players Association amid backlash.
Before Sunday’s games, President Trump once again criticized the league by citing players kneeling during the anthem and the decline in broadcast television ratings for Thursday’s opening game between the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles. That matchup, however, was pushed to a later kickoff time by severe weather, and no players kneeled during the national anthem (though Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett sat before the end of the song).

Antakya, Turkey – Russian-backed Syrian government forces have pounded rebel-held areas in northwest Syria, killingat least five people in a second day of heavy bombardment, according to rescuers.
The intensified strikes on Sunday, including air attacks, shelling and helicopter-dropped barrel bombs, targeted villages in southern Idlib and northern Hama provinces.
The escalation comes amid growing fears over a seemingly imminent all-out offensive against the densely populated Idlib province, the last rebel bastion in Syria.
A baby and a young child were killed in the village of Habeit in southern Idlib in a barrel bomb attack, according to the White Helmets, a civil defence group operating in rebel-held areas.
Three others, including a rebel officer, were killed in air raids and shelling that struck the northern Hama province.
Abd al-Karim al-Rahmoun, a member of the White Helmets in northern Hama, said that about half of the local population had left the sparsely populated region to escape the bombardment.
Activists told Al Jazeera that while hundreds of people have been fleeing the attacks in northern Hama and southern Idlib provinces, there has not been a significant wave of civilians moving towards the north.
In some cases, the activists said, people would leave their villages early in the morning and return after sunset once the bombardment stopped.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), over the past 72 hours, forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian ally have hit rebel-held areas 1,060 times with air attacks, shelling and barrel bombs.
In response, al-Jabha al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir (NLF), a major armed opposition group, on Sunday shelled government forces’ positions in northern Hama, SOHR reported.
Meanwhile, another convoy of Turkish military vehicles crossed into Idlib province on Sunday.
Over the past 10 days, a number of similar convoys carrying weapons and armoured cars have entered northern Syria to reinforce 12 observation points manned by Turkish soldiers.
These outposts, which are located in rebel-held areas in western Aleppo, northern Hama and Idlib provinces, were established under the de-escalation agreements reached by Turkey, Iran and Russia.
“[These reinforcements are] a sign that Turkey treats the issue of Idlib very seriously and it is not going to easily turn a blind eye on any Russian, regime or Iranian military design for it,” said Galip Dalay, director of research at the Istanbul-based Sharq Forum.
Dalay said Turkey would not withdraw its troops from the observation posts any time soon, unless it reached an agreement with Russia, Iran and the Syrian government.
“At this stage, I don’t see a deal that exists,” he said. “During this period, targeted attacks will continue … but will not produce any big waves of refugees.”
Already hosting more than three million Syrian refugees, Turkey is keen to avoid a full-fledged government offensive. Its call for a ceasefire, however, was rejected on Friday by Russia at a summit in Iran’s capital, Tehran.
Speaking to reporters earlier on Sunday, Suleyman Soyli, Turkey’s interior minister, warned of the possibility of mass displacement in the event of a large-scale military offensive on Idlib.
“We care about humanity and we won’t give up. We will not be responsible for a migration wave in case of possible attacks [on Idlib],” Soyli said.
The northwestern province bordering Turkey is home to an estimated three million people, half of whom are internally displaced.
Soyli added that 255,300 Syrians have returned to their homes over the past two years, including 160,000 who went to the “Euphrates Shield region” in northern Aleppo province, which rebel groups and the Turkish army took over from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) in 2016.
We’re just days away from Apple’s next iPhone launch so, naturally, the leaks and rumors have kicked into overdrive.
Now, it looks like we have some fresh details about Apple’s cheapest, 6.1-inch iPhone. New images that surfaced on Twitter purportedly show the new iPhone in four colors and reveal a name: iPhone Xc.
Leaker Ben Geskin posted the images, which show the back and sides of the new iPhone in four colors: red, white, dark blue, and pink. According to Geskin, the images are only of “dummy models,” not actual handsets, but his information lines up with much of what we’ve already heard about the phone.
Previous rumors have suggested Apple is planning to offer the device in a range of new colors, though there’s no sign of the alleged orange variation we heard about awhile back. Geskin also confirms the phone’s size — 6.1 inches — and its LCD display.
Indeed, what might be the most interesting part of this leak is the name of the new model: iPhone Xc. While some onlookers had thought Apple might call the new entry-level phone iPhone 9, iPhone Xc actually makes sense for a lot of reasons.
It streamlines the whole line, for one, by keeping the “iPhone X” moniker in some form. While the “c” harkens back to the short-lived iPhone c, the basic iPhone 5-sized phones Apple offered in a variety of colors as a cheaper alternative to its flagships.
Of course, this is all still just speculation at this point. We won’t know for sure until Apple’s official reveal next week. But all signs certainly seem to point to new iPhones in a lot more colors — regardless of its name.
Among the new accusations made to The New Yorker is one by veteran television executive Phyllis Golden-Gottlieb, who worked with Moonves in the late 1980s. Golden-Gottlieb tells The New Yorker’s Ronan Farrow “that she filed a criminal complaint late last year with the Los Angeles Police Department, accusing Moonves of physically restraining her and forcing her to perform oral sex on him, and of exposing himself to her and violently throwing her against a wall in later incidents.”
In a statement to The New Yorker, Moonves acknowledged three of the six new encounters detailed by the outlet Sunday, but said they were consensual: “The appalling accusations in this article are untrue,” the statement said. “What is true is that I had consensual relations with three of the women some 25 years ago before I came to CBS. And I have never used my position to hinder the advancement or careers of women. In my 40 years of work, I have never before heard of such disturbing accusations. I can only surmise they are surfacing now for the first time, decades later, as part of a concerted effort by others to destroy my name, my reputation, and my career. Anyone who knows me knows that the person described in this article is not me.” The outlet reports that Moonves declined to specify which three encounters he considered consensual.
Shortly after the New Yorker story broke Sunday, CNN Money reported that the CBS board of directors “is likely to announce the deal by Monday morning, according to two executives with direct knowledge of the matter.”
A representative for CBS did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment regarding the new CNN and New Yorker reports.
News of this departure timeline comes days after a CNBC report stating that Moonves, 68, was in settlement talks with the CBS board of directors about leaving the company.
Moonves, who has been accused of inappropriate conduct in incidents that happened more than two decades ago, was reportedly offered somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million by the board, CNBC reported. The executive is reportedly due nearly $180 million in severance and a production deal under his current contract.
The first six women accused Moonves of sexual misconduct in a lengthy article published in The New Yorker last month, which also suggested that the company maintains a testosterone-fueled culture where “everything feels old, the people, the furniture, the culture, the mores.” One of the accusers is actress Illeana Douglas (Six Feet Under), who reportedly alleges she was fired from a 1997 pilot after refusing Moonves’ advances, which included “violent kissing” and holding her down on his office couch.
At the time of those first six misconduct accusations, Moonves released this statement to The New Yorker, which was also obtained by EW: “Throughout my time at CBS, we have promoted a culture of respect and opportunity for all employees, and have consistently found success elevating women to top executive positions across our Company. I recognize that there were times decades ago when I may have made some women uncomfortable by making advances. Those were mistakes, and I regret them immensely. But I always understood and respected — and abided by the principle — that ‘no’ means ‘no,’ and I have never misused my position to harm or hinder anyone’s career. This is a time when we all are appropriately focused on how we help improve our society, and we at CBS are committed to being part of the solution.”
A former actor, Moonves went on to become one of the most powerful men in the industry after resuscitating CBS. His compensation reflects his value to the company: The New Yorker reports that he earned nearly $70,000,000 last year, making him one of the highest-paid executives in the world.

The one-time “Apprentice” star, told MSNBC in an interview that she used the hashtag in messages with family, “staffers” and people working in federal agencies, but did not say specifically who else in the administration used the notation.
Manigault Newman described the practice as something like a virtual eye-rolling about the boss, but the assertion comes just days after an anonymous op-ed in The New York Times suggested aides have considered invoking the 25th Amendment’s process of removing the president from office.

“We had a little hashtag, hashtag TFA, whenever he did something that was just so insane and so crazy and unhinged, when he would flip positions from one hour to the next, we’d just hashtag it ‘TFA’ and keep moving,” Manigault Newman said.
The White House pushed back on the assertion Sunday.
“Everyone, even the media, knows she has no credibility. The idea this ever happened is completely ridiculous and just further shows the she will say and do anything to try and be relevant,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.
“It’s embarrassing for the press to keep giving her a platform,” she added.
