Chris Hemsworth’s abs aren’t the only sell in new Bad Times at the El Royale trailer

news image

Apparently, there’s a lot more going on in Bad Times at the El Royale beyond Chris Hemsworth frolicking shirtless in golden fields of sunshine and flowers, and the new trailer is here to highlight those things.

Drew Goddard, the filmmaker behind The Cabin in the Woods (another Hemsworth pic) and the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind The Martian, helms this new film about seven strangers who meet at the El Royale hotel in Lake Tahoe. As the night unfolds, so too does the inn’s dark past and the real identities of its inhabitants.

The priest (Jeff Bridges) admits he’s not really a priest, the Mad Men-looking vacuum cleaner salesman (Jon Hamm) makes a shady phone call, the concierge (Lewis Pullman) has been secretly spying on his guests, and a young woman named Emily (Dakota Johnson) seems to have history with the Thor-looking cult leader (Hemsworth). There’s also singer Darlene Sweet (Cynthia Erivo) and Emily’s impressionable younger sister (Cailee Spaeny) in the mix.

And, in case you forgot, Hemsworth bears his six-pack in a field.

“Rather than starting from an idea and a logline, this started from a basic premise: A bunch of characters check into a hotel on one night in 1969, and nobody is who they appear,” Goddard told EW. “I started with that very simple concept, wrote the roles, and then let the characters dictate the story.”

This film opens in theaters on Oct. 12.

Sexually-transmitted diseases surge for the 4th straight year, CDC reports

news image

Federal health officials said Tuesday that new cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis spiked nearly 10 percent in 2017, continuing a four-year trend of rising sexually-transmitted diseases fueled by lack of awareness and changing sexual behavior.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 2.29 million new cases of these three common yet treatable sexually-transmitted diseases were diagnosed in 2017.

The number of new STD cases have continued a “steep, sustained increase” since 2013, CDC reported. The rise in cases — now at record levels — comes as the federal budget has not increased STD program funding since 2013, leaving local health departments scrambling to address the problem with fewer resources.

“There is a shocking increase in STDs in America,” said David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors. “We think there is a direct correlation between the increase in the number of STDs,” and the lack of federal funding increases.

From 2016 to 2017, cases of primary and secondary syphilis grew more than 10 percent, chlamydia increased nearly 7 percent and gonorrhea surged nearly 19 percent, according to preliminary CDC figures released Tuesday.

Left untreated, these infections can result in infertility, pregnancy complications or increase the risk of HIV transmission.

Federal health officials are particularly troubled by the 67 percent jump in gonorrhea cases since 2013 because the bacterial infection has become resistant to all antibiotics except ceftriaxone.

Public health officials in England this year reported a man contracted gonorrhea that resisted the commonly prescribed drug combination of ceftriaxone and azithromycin.

Public health officials expect that super-resistant strain will emerge in the U.S.

“We will have drug resistant gonorrhea in the United States,” Harvey said. “It’s going to happen. It is not a question of if but when.”

Since 2015, the CDC has recommended a single shot of ceftriaxone be combined with an oral dose of azithromycin to treat people with gonorrhea.

Although this two-drug combination has not yet failed in the U.S., the CDC said that lab testing confirms that resistance to azithromycin has increased from 1 percent of cases is 2013 to more than 4 percent in 2017. Azithromycin has been used to stall resistance to ceftriaxone.

Experts said many factors have led to the increase in STDs, including a lack of awareness about the seriousness of infection and changing sexual behavior. Medical technology such as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, a daily medication used to reduce the risk of HIV transmission, have prompted some to no longer use condoms.

Young adults may not fear HIV transmission as the once-deadly virus has become more of a chronic condition that can be managed with medication. Some appear more willing to engage in risky, unprotected sex, which has led to the spread of preventable STDs, officials said.

“We are sliding backward,” Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, said in a statement. “It is evident the systems that identify, treat, and ultimately prevent STDs are strained to near-breaking point.”

Detroit police dog dies after being left in hot vehicle

news image

A Detroit police K-9 officer has been assigned to patrol duty as he awaits word on possible discipline after his police dog died due to being left in a hot vehicle.

The incident happened June 26. Detroit Police Cmdr. Darin Szilagy said the officer started his vehicle with a remote start and left his German Shepherd Vito inside with the air conditioner running while he and another officer left to pick up a different vehicle.

When the officer returned after about 40 minutes, Szilagy said, he found the vehicle off and Vito suffering from obvious signs of heat stroke. The dog was rushed to an emergency veterinarian. He died from cardiac arrest the next day.

The department launched an internal probe.

“The investigation found while there were mechanical issues with the vehicle, the officer was also found responsible for the incident,” Szilagy said. “Our policy is that you should check the dog every 30 minutes, no matter what.”

Read more:

Szilagy said the vehicle’s heat alarm system failed. He also said the investigation revealed that the officer knew that the vehicle would sometimes shut off, but never reported it so it could be fixed.

“So if something would happen to the vehicle and it shuts off and the temperature reaches 95 degrees inside, the vehicle is supposed to lower the windows, turn on some fans, and start honking to alert someone the vehicle is off. … At some point while they were gone, the police vehicle had turned off, and the heat alarm system failed,” Szilagy said.

The high temperature on June 26 in Detroit was 78 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. It was sunny all day.

Vehicles can quickly overheat in warm weather. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, on an 85 degree day, it takes just 30 minutes for an interior of a car to reach 120 degrees.

Szilagy said the internal investigation is complete. The officer has been assigned patrol duties while he awaits news of possible discipline from the department’s disciplinary administration unit.

Szilagy said the officer doesn’t have any disciplinary history and is broken up over what happened.

“The officer is distraught over the incident. He is a very good officer,” Szilagy said. “He was training rigorously with that dog. He is beyond consolation.”

Aretha Franklin fans pay respects to Queen of Soul during public viewing in Detroit

news image

Aretha Franklin fans are saying their final goodbyes to the Queen of Soul.

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit is hosting two days of public open-casket visitations. Franklin died at age 76 of pancreatic cancer on Aug. 16.

On Tuesday, the first of the two days, hundreds of people, some of whom spent the night on the sidewalk to save their spots in line, showed up to pay their respects, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Franklin’s body was dressed in a red suit and crimson pumps in a gold-plated casket. Gold thread spelled out “Aretha Franklin, The Queen of Soul” in the casket’s lining.

The casket arrived in a white 1940 Cadillac LaSalle hearse, the Detroit Free Press noted. The historic vehicle has also carried the bodies of Franklin’s father Rev. C.L. Franklin in 1984, singer David Ruffin in 1991, and Rosa Parks in 2005.

“It was very moving,” Detroit resident Charlotte Smith told the Detroit Free Press. “She has a beautiful smile. … She looks serene resting as a true queen.”

“She’s the Queen,” Melissa Howard, who traveled from Austin for the event, said to the outlet. “She’s royalty. She’s worth it.”

“She meant so much to so many people,” Frances Billingslea of Detroit said to the Detroit Free Press. “She’s a local talent. She was a down-home spirit. She didn’t put herself above anybody even though she was the Queen of Soul. She did so much for this community.”

Franklin’s funeral, which will be streamed online and on television, will take place on Friday.

Former president Bill Clinton, Smokey Robinson, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Cicely Tyson, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Clive Davis, and others will speak at the funeral. Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Faith Hill, Chaka Khan, and others will perform at the service.

Trump aide says president weighing regulations on Google search engine that he considers ‘rigged’

news image

WASHINGTON – White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Tuesday that President Donald Trump is considering new regulations on Google’s search engine to address his concern that it turns up too many stories that are critical of him.

Pressed by reporters at the White House on Tuesday about a tweet the president wrote criticizing Google’s search engine as “rigged,” the director of Trump’s National Economic Council said the administration is “taking a look” at federal regulations for the company.

“We’ll let you know,” he said.

Earlier, Trump expressed frustration on Twitter that when Americans type  “Trump News” into the search engine, it generates mostly negative news about him while conservative media is “shut out.”

Google said in a statement that its search engine is not designed with the intent of promoting a political ideology but is instead aimed at generating “high-quality content” in response to user queries.

“When users type queries into the Google Search bar, our goal is to make sure they receive the most relevant answers in a matter of seconds,” said Riva Sciuto, a Google spokesperson.

“Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don’t bias our results toward any political ideology,” Sciuto said. “We continually work to improve Google Search and we never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment.”

Eddie Murphy is adding to his brood, reports say.

The comedian-actor is expecting his 10th kid with his longtime girlfriend Paige Butcher, the second for the couple, People magazine and Entertainment Tonight report. USA TODAY has reached out to Murphy’s rep for comment.

Murphy, 57, and Butcher, 39, began dating in 2012. Their daughter, Izzy Oona Murphy, turned two in May.

The new baby is set to arrive in December, according to the outlets, and will be welcomed by several siblings.

Murphy has five children with his ex-wife, Nicole Murphy: Bria: 28, Miles Mitchell: 25, Shayne Audra: 23,  Zola Ivy: 18, and Bella Zahra: 16. The former pair were wed in 1993 and divorced in 2006.

Murphy is also the father to 29-year-old son, Eric, whose mother is Paulette McNeely;  27-year-old Christian, whose mother is Tamara Hood; and 11-year-old Angel Iris Murphy Brown, whose mother is former Spice Girl and current “America’s Got Talent” judge Mel B.

Man Utd: Jose Mourinho has club’s backing despite defeat by Tottenham

news image

‘Respect! Respect! Respect!’ – Mourinho walks out of news conference

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho still has the club’s backing despite Monday’s 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham.

United have lost two of their first three Premier League games for the first time since 1992-93.

However, senior figures at Old Trafford are convinced Mourinho can turn the situation around.

Mourinho, 55, remained on the pitch to applaud fans after the game at Old Trafford and praised them in TV interviews.

Asked about United’s defensive problems in the post-match news conference, he raised three fingers and said: “Do you know what this means? Yes, it means 3-0, but it also means three Premier Leagues – and I won more Premier Leagues alone than the other 19 managers put together. Three for me. Two for them.”

As he got up to leave, Mourinho told a journalist: “Respect! Respect! Respect man!”

The Portuguese last week said had “no problem” with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, amid reports that they have fallen out.

Mourinho took over at United in 2016, winning the League Cup and the Europa League in his first season in charge, when they finished sixth in the Premier League.

United were runners-up to Manchester City last season.

He has won the Premier League three times with Chelsea and claimed two titles in Portugal, two in Italy and one in Spain as well as winning the Champions League twice.

US rejects UN court jurisdiction over Iran sanctions case

news image

The United States told the UN’s top court it has no jurisdiction to rule on Iran’s demand for the suspension of nuclear-related sanctions recently reimposed on the country.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague “lacks prima facie jurisdiction to hear Iran’s claims”, US State Department lawyer Jennifer Newstead argued on Tuesday.

During the first hearing of the case on Monday, Iran argued US President Donald Trump breached a 1955 treaty with his decision to reimpose sanctions after withdrawing from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

Iran unemployment crisis, rising living costs bite amid sanctions

Newstead said the United States has the right to protect its national security and other interests.

She said the treaty “cannot therefore provide a basis for this court’s jurisdiction” in the case.

Sanctions on Iran were lifted under the 2015 accord with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. In return, Tehran committed not to develop nuclear weapons.

However, Trump said the deal did not do enough to curb the alleged threat from Iran. He pulled the US out of the accord in May and began reimposing sanctions earlier this month.

“This case is entirely about an attempt to compel the US by order of this court to resume” the 2015 nuclear deal, Newstead said.

On Monday, Iran’s lawyers said the sanctions were threatening the welfare of its citizens and disrupting tens of billions of dollars worth of business deals.

Lawyer Jennifer Newstead, right, looks at Iran’s representative Mohsen Mohebi on Tuesday [AFP]

The Islamic Republic’s lead representative in the case, Mohsen Mohebi, branded the sanctions “naked economic aggression”.

“The United States is publicly propagating a policy intended to damage as severely as possible Iran’s economy and Iranian nationals and companies,” Mohebi said.

“Iran will put up the strongest resistance to the US economic strangulation by all peaceful means.”

But the US lawyers held Iran to blame for its economic woes.

US-Iran sanctions: Economic uncertainty hits hard

They have “deep roots in the Iranian government’s mismanagement of its own economy and repression of its own population”, Newstead said.

The court in the Netherlands adjourned until Wednesday when Iran will have the opportunity to respond to the US’ arguments.

The ICJ is expected to take several weeks to decide whether to grant Tehran’s request. A final decision could take years.

Its judgements are binding, final and without appeal, however, it has no power to enforce its decisions.

However, whether any decision will be implemented remains unclear. Both Iran and the US in the past have ignored the UN court’s rulings against them.

Despite the 1955 Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations, the two countries have not had diplomatic ties since 1980.

Rotten Tomatoes announces major changes to boost critic diversity

news image

Critic aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes is undergoing a major overhaul of its certification process in an effort to bring more critics under its umbrella.

In a first wave changes being rolled out, the site will add podcasts and video movie reviews to its mix of scores instead of just written ones. Also, the site will relax its critic certification process to allow prolific reviewers who might not be full-time employees of a known publication to get their self-published reviews on the site. Rotten Tomatoes is considering tweaking other aspects of its platform as well.

The site has come under fire in recent years from filmmakers (who claim the site’s scores can be too simplistically harsh) and progressive pundits (noting critics on the site skew white and male).

EW spoke to Paul Yanover, president of Rotten Tomatoes’ parent company Fandango, and Jenny Jediny, the site’s critics relations manager, about the changes.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So what prompted these changes?
PAUL YANOVER: We’ve had Rotten Tomatoes as part of the Fandango family for a couple years, and we’ve been looking over the last 18 months to where do we go next. We’ve been expanding content on Rotten Tomatoes, both written and video. We’ve been looking at the product, as we relaunch the look and feel of Rotten Tomatoes. We brought on Jenny to lead critics relations — a completely new function; critics are the backbone of the Tomatometer itself. We wanted to take a fresh look at, who are the population of critics and how do we cultivate that population in a purposeful way.

In the critic world, we started to look at the landscape of media and what is going on in this community of critics … we said, look, Rotten Tomatoes itself is 20 years old, it was created at a time when the internet was steeped in print journalism. Now we’re in a world where there’s a lot more opportunity to expand critic reach — in video, and in audio like podcasts.

Another big change was in the composition of critics as they moved from full-time to freelance. You may be a freelance writer who gets reviews on a publication, but if you review and self-publish, we didn’t use your review — even though we know it’s a high-quality review because you work for a publication…

JENNY JEDINY: Historically, critics were more heavily approved through publications. We’re shifting our focus to approve more critics individually to help freelance critics become more visible. So in the past if you only contributed to the Tomatometer based on a specific publication that was Tomotometer approved and you didn’t get an assignment, your stories wouldn’t appear on the Tomatometer. By individually approving more critics we’re hoping to make them more visible because there’s a chance they will have more clout wherever they publish.

How will these changes manifest in the scores, which are such a big focus of movie fans? How will they change, presumably, moving forward?
PAUL YANOVER: The actual arithmetic of the score doesn’t change. It’s a tally of reviews that recommend the movie. One of the changes I’m excited about is, we have the expectation that a volume of reviews that compose a score will go up. We’re in a business where more is more. I much prefer the Tomatometer score include more reviews rather than fewer reviews so users feel like they’re getting the best product possible.

Surely there must have been something about the results of the current system that inspired this. If you thought “these scores are spot on and perfect,” it’s hard to imagine making major systemic changes only for volume. What do you think will be the overall impact on the scores themselves?
PAUL YANOVER: No, actually, volume does matter to us. The product is an aggregation product. The more we can aggregate, the better product we have. It doesn’t mean we don’t like our scores. We love our scores. We have an accurate, useful product. The thing we care about is the composition of the reviewers themselves. We recognize the world is always in change. We care about the diversity of those voices. We care about it reflecting the viewership. Many aspects about Rotten Tomatoes, subtle and not subtle, created perceived obstacles [to getting certified], so many critics didn’t apply. We had criteria that were tough for them to overcome. We had instances where critics don’t have enough access to film festivals or not being completely included on lists by the studios. Credentialing them as Tomatometer-approved actually raises their profile and gets them on the list. We’re also creating a fund to help critics get to places like Cannes and Sundance. It’s more critics, it’s a more diverse set of voices, and a broader set of platforms not relying so much on written word review.

There have been well-publicized instances in the past where a critic slammed movies like Lady Bird and The Dark Knight just to get the contrarian hate-clicks and bring down the high score. Presumably, this means that a lone critic will have less sway?
PAUL YANOVER:  The law of larger numbers will always reduce the impact of any single contributor to anything, so more reviews is more reviews. We’re not changing this because we’re trying to undo something or prevent something, but increase our supply and make a product that’s better.

“Fresh” still set at 60 percent I assume?
PAUL YANOVER: All the thresholds and methodology are not changing.

Will there be any changes to the fan scores, which have come under some criticism for being seemingly gamed by users?
PAUL YANOVER: Not any changes at present. But there are lots of things that are on our roadmap. It’s not what we’re focused on at this juncture.

Will what constitutes a “Top Critic” remain the same?
PAUL YANOVER: Currently yes. I would put it in the “ongoing” category as we continue to look at these products.

Whenever there’s a Rotten Tomatoes-centric story, some readers will always bring up your other corporate parent, Warner Bros., and accuse the site of being influenced by them. Does your corporate parent give any input into the way you handle specific titles or changes to the system like you’re making today?
PAUL YANOVER: No. Think of us operating like an independent news bureau. There’s no operational connection to any kind of corporate ownership.

Anything else in your changes that you think fans would be interested to know?
JENNY JEDINY: By adding more platforms, like video critics and podcasts for the first time, I think that will be exciting for users already in tune with that. I think this will be a great way for them to discover new critics. We’re also adding a critics spotlight where we’re focusing on new critics with a photo and bio and a link to their Rotten Tomatoes profile, plus we’ll be promoting that on social [media].
