Meryl Streep’s strong reaction at the tennis is totally going to be a meme

news image

Meryl Streep, celebrated actor, meme queen, and unabashed tennis tragic, has pulled out another highly GIF-able moment.

Streep was courtside at the gruelling U.S. Open final between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martín del Potro on Sunday, which inevitably meant the camera was going to fall on her at some point.

Fortunately, the multiple award-winning Streep is really good at throwing some dramatic faces on cue, like when del Potro won a nail-biting, 16-shot point in the second set.

It’s a mixture of amazement and sheer disbelief, and it’s excellent.

There was a particularly delightful moment when commentators began talking about Streep on air. You bet she was listening.

All praise the meme queen.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the latest episode of Insecure, which aired Sunday night on HBO Read at your own risk!

Insecure delivered a major surprise in the final moments of Sunday’s episode.

In the HBO comedy’s latest installment “High-Like,” Issa (creator Issa Rae) took a wild and drug-filled trip to Coachella with her friends and ended up spending some quality time Nathan (Kendrick Sampson), her latest suitor; however, the show saved its biggest move for last. While on a water run to 7-11, Issa ran into her ex-boyfriend Lawrence, played by Jay Ellis, who hasn’t been seen all season, in the final seconds of the episode.

“Hey, Issa.”

“Lawrence. Hey.”

And roll credits!

Ellis’ appearance comes as a surprise since both Rae and showrunner Prentice Penny previously said that the show was taking a break from the character in season 3. Clearly, they didn’t mean the entire season. According to Ellis, who spoke to EW exclusively, his return was also news to the show’s crew, all of whom were confused when he returned to shoot this scene.

“People literally didn’t know I was showing up to set. It was really amazing,” says Ellis, whose name was kept off of the call sheet the day he returned to set. “It was like a homecoming feeling. It was like seeing friends and seeing family that you haven’t seen in a while, but people were also kind of shocked when they saw me, which was really interesting.”

You can expect to see more of Lawrence in next week’s episode, which will dig into what this encounter means for him and Issa, who haven’t seen each other since their season 2-ending reconciliation.

“You can expect it to be fun to watch,” says Ellis. “I really think it’s just about the encounter. It’s all really built on that moment. Most of us, I would assume, who are reading this and are out there watching the show, [or] if you’ve ever bumped into an ex before, [know] what that moment is like and how awkward it may be and how you try to cover and how goofy you may act or rude you may act or surprised. You don’t know what to say, or you say too much, or whatever it may be. In a brief moment, we get to see Lawrence and Issa kind of go through that. We get to see these two people, who were obviously in a relationship for so long, figure out that brief encounter in the middle of the night.”

Below, Ellis opens up about how he found he wouldn’t appear in the first four episodes and more.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I want to start at the beginning. How did you react when you found out that you weren’t going to appear in the first four episodes of the season?
JAY ELLIS: Honestly, I kind of found out in a very sneaky way. I was down in the production office. I was in the writers’ room, and I kind of saw up on the board where they break down stories that Lawrence wasn’t up there. I was like, “Oh, I’ve got a long vacation.” I didn’t say anything because I wasn’t sure and I knew they were still breaking the story, but about a week or two later, Issa and Prentice actually called me, and they were like, “Hey, we want to try something. We think that’ll work in this way. And this is what we’re thinking, and what do you think?” I was like, “Yeah, guys, it’s cool. Don’t worry about it. I’ll be on vacation, so when you need me just let me know. I’ll be on a beach somewhere.”

So, I actually did go away. I was actually on a beach for hiding. But, it was great, it was super easy, and I fully understood their reason for wanting to do it and thought it would be interesting. We’ll see what happens.

Were you worried during that week in between finding out via the board and them calling you, or did you expect something like this?
No, I don’t think you ever expect not to be on the show that you’re hired to be on. I think that’s always a bit of a shock. I think anyone would be like, “Wait, what? Am I on the show, or am I not on the show? What’s going on?”
But no, I didn’t freak out, man. I think I’ve gotten to this place where I’m just very comfortable with like what will be, will be. I’m very much like a self-motivated, self-starter, super goal-oriented, so I’m always out doing other stuff anyway. It just happened that I was out pitching a couple TV shows, sold one of those shows, set up another one — set up both of them now actually. So, my mind was just so busy on other stuff that it really didn’t consume me, which is what I think most people would probably assume would happen. I actually had a really good calm about it.

Did you find it hard to keep this a secret?
I think I am probably a little bit more of an introvert than people would expect, so I don’t think it was hard for me to not talk about it. I definitely missed being with everyone for sure, but at the same time, I got to watch Y’lan [Noel] go out, and Yvonne and Issa. I stepped back and still watched everything they were doing and was just genuinely happy for them. One of the things I think is really cool, too, is I got to be a fan of the show. I don’t know what’s going on. I’m watching this stuff in real-time just like everybody else. That to me was a feeling that was really cool and unique, and I don’t know if I’ll ever get to experience anything like that again, but it was just such an amazing thing. I didn’t have that much of a hard time because I was proud to sit back and watch everybody else kind of run with it. Also, I spent five weeks out of the country, so that helped.

When Issa said you weren’t going to be on the show this season, were you surprised that was the strategy they were taking?
Well, I’m going to back up. I think Issa was misquoted, and I think it’s actually very unfair that she was misquoted. I think what Issa actually said was, “We’re taking a break from Lawrence.” A break doesn’t mean a season. A break could mean an episode, it could mean 30 minutes, it could mean a year. She didn’t actually put a time limit on what the break was. I think that because she said we’re taking a break from Lawrence this season, people ran with what they thought that break was and therefore they thought that break was for the entire season, and that wasn’t the case. I think she actually chose her words very correctly, and I think people just kind of took it and ran with it in another way.

But, there were conversations that had been happening since March about all of this. I mean, you’re dealing with a network like HBO that’s like the gold standard in television, and they have great teams in both marketing and PR and development. So, it was a lot of, how do you market this show with this character gone? How do you surprise people? How do you push the show along when people are expecting that storyline? I gotta give Issa and Prentice a lot of credit. I had my opinions on it, and there were things I felt were really important and really strong and would make it more successful and believable. I think Prentice and Issa were really open to that and HBO was really open to that, and it all, hopefully, kind of worked out and will surprise people.

What input did you have on how the secret was kept?
There was always a question of, should I go out and do any of the marketing and all the promo we do for the show? For me, the answer was always no. My whole idea was if you really want people to believe Lawrence is gone, then he has to be gone and he can’t be a part of the early press, or he can’t be a part of the early promo.

Also, I think it really goes back to, more importantly, what’s true to the writing. What happens in life when you break up with somebody? You don’t always see your exes again. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don’t. Our writers took the stance of, these two aren’t going to see each other for a while, and they’re going to randomly bump into each other. For me as an actor to live [it], and I also think for an audience to believe it, I think that person has to kind of disappear. Whether we’re characters or whether we’re fans, or actors, we’re all kind of taken aback when we then bump into that person somewhere down the line.

The #LawrenceHive didn’t take the news of your absence well, and there was even a petition to bring Lawrence back. How did you feel about the fan’s response to the news?
It was absolutely amazing. A friend of mine sent me the petition. He was like, “Have you seen this?” He’s a few hours ahead of me. I opened it up first thing in the morning, and I literally just started laughing. All I could do is laugh because it’s such a cool feeling and such an amazing feeling to get to play a character that people identify with and relate to and root for and feel so strongly about. All I could think is, “These fans are so amazing.” It’s a bit overwhelming, but overwhelming in a good way where it’s just like, “Wow, this is just so cool to know that so many people just support this dude and want to see his life and his story, whether he’s with Issa or not.” I think that’s a true testament to the writing, to be honest with you because I think our writers have done such a great job of making a character that’s so layered and relatable that people want to know what’s happening with him.

But I will say the Lawrence Hive is one of the most amazing hives to ever exist. I think only Beyoncé has a hive other than Lawrence, so that makes me feel pretty good, too.

How has Lawrence changed in the time that he’s been off-screen?
I would like to think he’s hopefully grown up a little bit. But I think we probably get to see some of that or hear some of that with him and Issa. I think he and Issa probably have a little bit of a conversation about that, so I think that’s something that we all get to see.

Do you stick around for the rest of the season?
You gotta watch to see.

With ‘Superstar’ Emmy, John Legend, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice are now EGOT winners

NEW YORK – NBC’s live version of “Jesus Christ Superstar” has won an Emmy Award and that has made three men extra happy – it means star John Legend, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice have joined the elite squad of EGOT winners.

The musical’s win for best live variety special on Sunday means Legend, Lloyd Webber and Rice have Emmys to go with their Tonys, Grammys and their Oscars – the four biggest prizes in show business.

Writing partners Lloyd Webber and Rice have already won Tonys (“Evita” and “Sunset Boulevard”), Grammys (“Cats,” ”Evita”) and an Oscar for “You Must Love Me” from “Evita.” Legend has won 10 Grammys and in 2015 he scored an Oscar for his song “Glory” from the movie “Selma.” Last year, he won a Tony for best revival of a play as a co-producer of “Jitney.” Legend, who played Jesus in the concert version of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” won his Emmy as a co-producer of the show. He’s also gunning for an acting Emmy later this month.

Two other songwriters were also one Emmy away from the EGOT on Sunday – Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, whose song “In the Market for a Miracle” appeared in “A Christmas Story Live!” They won an Oscar for “La La Land,” and a Tony and a Grammy for “Dear Evan Hansen.” But their bid for EGOT status was derailed when the Emmy for outstanding original music and lyrics went to “Saturday Night Live” and their song “Come Back Barack” when Chance the Rapper was hosting.

The trio of Legend, Lloyd Webber and Rice – officially the 13th, 14th and 15th members of the EGOT club – join an elite group of winners that includes Robert Lopez, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Rita Moreno, Mike Nichols and Whoopi Goldberg. (Lopez, the “The Book of Mormon” and “Frozen” songwriter, who was 38 when he got EGOT status, is still the youngest to win all four awards. Legend is 39.)

The latest award caps a special year for Lloyd Webber, who turned 70 this year and whose autobiography, “Unmasked,” came out in the spring along with a massive, four-CD collection of his songs performed by the likes of Barbra Streisand, Lana Del Rey and Madonna. He was the subject of a Grammy Awards tribute, and winter Olympics fans would have noticed Lloyd Webber soundtracks for several skaters.

“Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert” beat out the telecasts of the Grammys, the Oscars and the Golden Globes, as well as the benefit show “Night of Too Many Stars” on HBO.

Novak Djokovic: Umpire ‘should not have pushed’ Serena Williams in US Open final

Naomi Osaka stunned Serena Williams to win the US Open, but Williams’ heated dispute with the chair umpire overshadowed the result.
USA TODAY

NEW YORK — It wasn’t all about winning the US Open for Novak Djokovic during his time with the media after posting a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday.

Djokovic was asked by a British journalist if cared to offer an opinion on what transpired during the controversial women’s final with Serena Williams and umpire Carlos Ramos. Williams was fined $17,000 on Sunday for three different violations during the second set of the match — a coaching warning, a point penalty after breaking a racket and the loss of a game for verbal abuse of the umpire.

Naomi Osaka won her first Grand Slam title of her career in that 6-2, 6-4 final, thereby denying Williams a 24th Grand Slam title, which would have tied Margaret Court’s all-time record.

“Look, I love Serena, first of all,” Djokovic said. “I really felt for her yesterday. Tough thing for a chair umpire to deal with, as well. We have to empathize with him. Everyone was in a very awkward situation yesterday. A lot of emotions. Serena was crying. Naomi was crying. It was really, really tough.”

MORE FROM THE US OPEN

After assessing the particulars, he offered his own viewpoint.

“But I have my personal opinion that maybe the chair umpire should not have pushed Serena to the limit, especially in a Grand Slam final,” he said. “Just maybe changed — not maybe, but he did change the course of the match. It was, in my opinion, maybe unnecessary. We all go through our emotions, especially when you’re fighting for a Grand Slam trophy.

“I just feel like, as Serena said yesterday in the closing ceremonies, Osaka deserves to have her moment. As for Serena, she knows I love her. She really inspires everyone. To see her still being so dedicated and so committed to this sport, it’s inspiring really to me and to many tennis players, both men and women, around the world.”

Earlier in the day, the WTA released a statement by their CEO Steve Simon in part stating the following:

“Yesterday also brought to the forefront the question of whether different standards are applied to men and women in the officiating of matches. The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women and is committed to working with the sport to ensure that all players are treated the same. We do not believe that this was done last night.”

When Simon’s stance was relayed to Djokovic he disagreed with the contention.

“I don’t think it’s (the) time and place really to get into other subjects,” Djokovic said. “I don’t see things as Mr. Simon does. I really don’t. I think men and women are, you know, treated in this way or the other way depending on the situation. It’s hard to generalize things, really. I don’t see it’s necessary really to debate that.”

YOU showrunner Sera Gamble breaks down the premiere’s shocking ending

Spoiler alert: This post contains plot details from the series premiere of YOU.

Joe Goldberg will do anything for love, and he proved that in the series premiere of YOU on Lifetime. In the show’s opening hour, Joe (played by Penn Badgley), a bookstore worker in New York City, met and quickly became infatuated with a young woman named Beck (Elizabeth Lail). Over the course of the episode, Joe went from looking through Beck’s social media accounts to stealing her phone to knocking out Benji (Lou Taylor Pucci), Beck’s boyfriend of sorts, and locking him in the bookstore’s soundproof basement. As far as crushes go, Joe went from sweet to scary in 60 minutes.

For those who read the 2014 Caroline Kepnes book on which the show is based, it might be a bit surprising that Joe is showing this side of himself so early in the series. But showrunner Sera Gamble says they felt it was necessary to move up the introduction of Joe’s darker side when adapting the book to the screen. “Something that was important to [executive producer] Greg [Berlanti] and me from the beginning was that we really needed you to know who Joe was by the end of the first episode,” Gamble says. “We didn’t believe that you could get a complete picture of Joe Goldberg by only seeing him as the thoughtful bookstore guy, or even only seeing him as a guy who might break into her apartment. We knew that it was quite necessary to present him as someone who was capable of that kind of violence.”

And yet, Joe didn’t kill Benji. Rather, the final moments of the episode revealed that Benji is still breathing. “I feel like that’s really the moment when you understand who Joe Goldberg is and who he has been since the first frame of the pilot,” Gamble says.

That twist will also lead to more screen time for Benji, as Joe now has to figure out what his next move should be. “Lou Taylor Pucci gets to have such a tour-de-force performance, where he basically experiences the entire spectrum of human emotion while he is in that cage,” Gamble says of the actor. “[Benji] is deceptively slight and douchey when you first meet him, but this experience grinds Benji down to his component parts. We knew we needed an actor who was capable of really intense and serious character work.”

YOU airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on Lifetime.

Browns aren’t satisfied with tie, but stalemate with Steelers is sign of progress

news image

CLOSE

NFL Sundays are back! Here’s all the action from Week 1.
USA TODAY Sports

CLEVELAND – At one point in overtime, when it was anybody’s game to win and nobody’s game to win, Jabrill Peppers had a pointed question amid the drama at rain-soaked FirstEnergy Stadium.

Peppers, a second-year safety for the Cleveland Browns, has been playing football since he was four years old. Until Sunday, he had never played in a tie game.

“I asked coach, ‘We’re going to a second overtime, right?’” Peppers recalled of a sideline chat.

“He said, ‘Not in regular season.’

“I’m like, ‘Aw, (expletive)!’ ”

The Browns engaged with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the NFL rarity of a 21-21 tie, which couldn’t be settled with 10 minutes of overtime or a winning field goal attempt.

Afterward, it was fair to debate which team felt more like it lost. The Steelers led 21-7 in the fourth quarter. The Browns turned what seemed like a miracle turnover into the chance for Zane Gonzalez to nail a 43-yard field goal, only to have the kick blocked by T.J. Watt with nine seconds on the clock.

“We don’t go to work to get ties,” Browns receiver Josh Gordon declared. “It’s a disappointment. It’s the equivalent of a loss. It’s not good enough.”

More: With Brady, Patriots show they can endure whatever changes come their way

More: Kirk Cousins is worth the investment for Minnesota Vikings

It was so Cleveland. Last season, the Browns became just the second franchise in NFL history to go 0-16. With a chance to end their 17-game losing streak against the dreaded divisional rival from Pittsburgh with a dramatic rally, it turned out that such a vision was just too good to be true.

Something had to happen, and it did with the blocked kick.

What a tease for the Browns and their rabid base. How  often does a team force six turnovers and not win? According to ESPN, NFL teams are 132-4-1 when they have a turnover margin of plus-5 or better, and the Browns can claim two of the losses and now the tie. It was like Lucy showed up and pulled the ball from Charlie Brown.

No wonder so many of the Browns, from coach Hue Jackson down, seemed so disgusted after they let one slip away – even though the Steelers should have been kicking themselves more.

Someone asked defensive end Myles Garrett, who made one big play after another down the stretch that illustrated why he was the first pick overall last year, whether it felt like a loss. Garrett flashed the smile of a man who collected two sacks and two forced fumbles and concluded, “It doesn’t feel like a win.”

Still, it’s progress by at least one measure for a team with a “hard knocks” life, long before becoming the subjects for HBO’s reality series this summer, Hard Knocks.

At least the Browns won’t go 0-16 again.

Go ahead, admit it. That’s progress. The team is headed in the right direction. Tyrod Taylor is, well, undefeated as Browns quarterback. There’s hope, more new blood and maybe even a star quarterback in the wings in rookie Baker Mayfield. They played scrappy against an AFC North bully.

That nobody would be satisfied with any back-handed compliments right now is progress, too.

They expect to win?

“There’s no way we shouldn’t have won this game,” Peppers grumbled. “We’ve just got to clean up the mental errors.”

Gordon: “We’ve got to get to the point where we don’t leave it up to special teams. We had multiple opportunities, where we could have avoided that scenario.”

Peppers said this wasn’t about changing the mindset after the 0-16 season. I’d beg to differ, given history, coaches on the hot seat and stuff like that.

“It’s a whole new team,” Peppers countered. “Nobody’s thinking about that. What was their record coming in?”

The Steelers were 0-0, just like the Browns. “New year,” Peppers said,

Maybe next time. The made-for-TV finish was set up by Joe Schobert’s 26-yard return of a Ben Roethlisberger fumble, the sixth turnover forced by the hungry Browns defense. But when Gonzalez’s kick went awry, it forced the Browns into a bit of self-reflection.

“I was sure he was going to make it,” Garrett said. “To see it blocked, it was, ‘Well, we’ve got ’em again. We have to beat ‘em next time.’”

Next time. It’s the hope that won’t quit.

Uefa Nations League: France beat Netherlands in first home game since World Cup triumph

news image

France defeated Croatia 4-2 in the final in Russia to win their second World Cup

World Cup winners France enjoyed a celebratory homecoming as they paraded their trophy following Nations League victory over the Netherlands.

Backed by a party atmosphere in Paris, France began the brighter and took a deserved lead through Kylian Mbappe.

Despite creating little, the visitors – who failed to qualify for Russia 2018 – found a way back through Ryan Babel.

However, Olivier Giroud’s smart finish with 16 minutes remaining was enough to hand Les Bleus the points in Group A1.

France coach Didier Deschamps named the same team that began the world champions’ goalless draw with Germany in their opening Nations League fixture on Thursday, with only the injured Hugo Lloris absent from the side that started the World Cup final in Russia.

The hosts began confidently and were gifted the lead on 14 minutes when Quincy Promes’ poor header evaded his team-mates – instead allowing Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi to find the unmarked Mbappe in the six-yard box.

Mbappe, scorer of four World Cup goals, almost had his second soon after, narrowly failing to make enough contact with Antoine Griezmann’s free-kick to trouble Netherlands goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

As the French pressure continued to increase, Cillessen then did well to beat Mbappe to a through ball – and avoid giving away a penalty in the process.

The Netherlands had their first real chance on 66 minutes as Georginio Wijnaldum muscled his way through the French defence, only to drag his shot wide. A minute later they were level as former Liverpool winger Babel beat Benjamin Pavard to right-back Kenny Tete’s cross.

Now resurgent, the Dutch side went close to taking the lead soon after as Memphis Depay fired into the side-netting.

But it was Chelsea forward Giroud who settled the game, moving swiftly ahead of Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk to meet substitute Benjamin Mendy’s cross and score his first goal in 11 internationals.

The Netherlands host Germany on Saturday (19:45 BST), before the Germans travel to face France on Tuesday, 16 October (19:45 BST).

Donald Glover paid tribute to Mac Miller, following the 26-year-old rapper’s death from an alleged drug overdose on Saturday.

Known by his performing moniker Childish Gambino, Glover spoke warmly of Miller during his gig at Chicago’s United Center on Sunday.

“I’m a very sensitive person… but this Mac Miller shit got me fucked up,” Glover said on stage, as per Rolling Stone

“He was the sweetest guy, he was so nice. And we were both, you know, kind of internet music kids, because, you know, we came up on the internet, and a lot of critics were like, ‘This corny-ass white dude,’ just like they were like, ‘This corny-ass black dude,’ and we used to talk. And this kid, he just loved music.

“And we should be allowed to be sad about that. Like my heart was broken… and I feel good about being sad, because it tells me that he was special, that I had a special moment… Everybody deserves that, everybody in this room.”

According to the publisher, Glover dedicated his song “Riot” to Miller.

“I just want to tell you that I love you and this song is for him, because I feel like sometimes he wanted to let go,” he said.

Miller, whose real name is Malcolm McCormick, passed away on Sunday, with reports attributing his death to a drug overdose, including . Miller’s family confirmed his death in a statement published by Rolling Stone, but did not reveal any details about his cause of death.

“He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time,” the statement read.

Fellow artists like Chance the Rapper, Ed Sheeran, and Solange Knowles also paid their respects to Miller, posting tributes on social media.

There has been significant media attention placed on Miller’s ex-partner Ariana Grande, following the rapper’s death.

The pair dated from 2016 until mid-2018. Grande posted a single photo on Instagram on Saturday, with no caption. Now leave her alone.

Big Brother 20 recap: An surprise engagement brings the houseguests closer to reality

news image

Haleigh, party of one. After Scottie’s second bizarre eviction on Thursday, our girl Hales is officially on her own, and with Kaycee crowned our newest HoH, seemingly all out of luck. She’s managed to elude the door many times in the past, but will this week’s double eviction be a double whammy for her chances?

The house is in good spirits after Kaycee’s Head of House win, but Brett is frustrated about losing HoH in a close finish. He tells the diary room that he was hoping to use a win to shake up the house, but now that Kaycee’s HoH he’s hopefully safe and without any blood on his hands. Also annoyed by the competition’s outcome is Haleigh, who saw an HoH win as her only shot at safety this week. Resigned to being on the block again, she now wonders who’ll be there next to her and vows to stay positive and “keep swimming.” Sam’s spirits are in flux as the reality of being in the final 7 sinks in. She tells the diary room it’s tough being alone in the house, but she’s trying to stay optimistic as another week approaches. In the game room, Kaycee and Angela see that they only have one last threat to get out of the house: Haleigh. Asked what reason she’ll give for putting her up, Kaycee tells Angela she’ll just say it’s an eye for an eye as Haleigh put her up twice.

The reveal of Kaycee’s HoH room is an energetic affair, as everyone’s giddy overseeing her family photos. However, a letter from her brother brings Kaycee to tears as he reveals his engagement and asks her to be his best woman at his wedding. This is a really touching moment as we’ve seen Kaycee discuss the difficulties she’s had with some family members over her sexuality. Kaycee tells the diary room this letter was the fuel she needed to drive her to the end and win the $500,000. We get a segment with Angela bringing up her acute sense of smell and how it’s an annoyance for her in the house as everything and everyone stinks. Apparently, Sam smells like Angela’s grandmother, who knew? Speaking of Sam, Level Six weighs the risks and awards of putting up her up as a pawn this week. Brett takes it upon himself to fill Sam in on the possibility of her being this week’s pawn, telling her that Haleigh is the clear target this week. Brett’s thinking is to keep her calm and collected so that he’ll be out of the woods if Sam is HoH next week. The plan seems to work as Sam tells the diary room she trusts Brett and has a bit of a laugh about her past paranoia.

Sam meets with Kaycee to figure out what her place as this week’s pawn will mean, but the discussion quickly turns to Sam’s frustration with Haleigh, namely her having “Tupperware with two pieces of fruit.” Kaycee is puzzled by the conversation but sees placating Sam as the only way her plan will come to fruition. Haleigh later meets with Kaycee with the assumption that she’ll be one of the nominees. She tries to tell her that “you have me,” over and over and over again. Kaycee plays nice but is clearly not falling for it, saying Haleigh’s still her main target. BB18 winner Nicole makes her return to the house to host this week’s “luxury competition,” but finds the house totally empty (they’re all in the HoH room watching the house goings-on). She walks into the diary room where her boyfriend/fellow BB18er Victor pops up on the TV to tell her there really isn’t a competition for her to host, but that he has something to say. We get a little clip package of all their little moments together as Victor says that he fell in love with her personality in the house, but that their relationship really blossomed after BB18 as he moved all the way to Michigan to be with Nicole. “Wherever you are is where I belong,” he tells her as I immediately swoon. Victor then emerges (looking almost 9 years old clean-shaven) on bended knee to pop the question, “Will you marry me?” Nicole says yes, and the houseguests are geeking out in the HoH room watching all this, which only adds to the cuteness of the moment. Nicole also can’t correctly roll the Rs in Arroyo, Victor’s last name, but I’m sure they have time. The doorbell rings to reveal a whole slew of their BB friends to celebrate the engagement. Derrick, Paul, Britney, Josh, and Daniele arrive with cake and flowers to compliment the happy couple and are soon joined by this season’s houseguests for one impromptu engagement party/fan freak out. It’s another sweet note in tonight’s episode as everyone hugs it out and celebrates over champagne. When Nicole brings up how much her and Victor’s lives have been affected and bookended by the show, it really highlights how big and meaningful Big Brother’s history has been to both the houseguests and us fans as we approach the end of season 20.

Tyler and Angela chat on the hammock as Angela talks her about her life before the house, namely her hyper-focus on gymnastics as a child. “Nothing I remember from the sport was ever good,” she tells the diary room as she expands on how monotonous the training and competitions were. It’s this focus on the sport that led to resentment between Angela and her mother, and later between her and her brother. It’s these family strains that ultimately caused her to leave gymnastics at 17 and move to pole vaulting. We’ve only really seen the icier side of Angela, and it’s a real eye-opener to see her share so much about herself. Haleigh meets with Kaycee to figure out where she stands this week and Kaycee tells her that she’s looking to get the least amount of blood on her hands — which means Haleigh’s definitely nominated. Haleigh wonders if she’s a pawn or the target, but Kaycee says she personally has to target and that, after the veto, it’s all up to the house. Alone and emotionally spent, Haleigh feels like her fate is sealed and that she’s a goner; Kaycee hugs it out with her and tells her that whatever happens, everything will be okay. In the diary room, Kaycee says that while she’s got nothing but love for Haleigh personally, she’s looking at the grand prize now and Haleigh merely an obstacle to pass through to win.

When the nomination ceremony arrives, it’s no surprise to anyone that Sam and Haleigh are the nominees. The reason given by Kaycee is to simply go for the path of least resistance, which is code for not biting the hands that feeds you (a.k.a. Level Six). We’ll find out on Wednesday if either Sam or Haleigh are able to get out of harm’s way and win the power of veto, but with only 17 (!) days to go until finale night, the road to the grand prize is nearing its final destination. It’ll be interesting to see what speedbumps emerge for the seven remaining houseguests.

For some reason, it has become mandatory for nationally televised NFL games to be accompanied with a music video theme song. Since 2013, NBC’s Sunday Night Football theme has been performed by Carrie Underwood.

Two seasons after Underwood first debuted a new Sunday Night Football song, the singer broke out yet another musical update for Week 1’s broadcast of Bears-Packers. In this version, “Ohhhhhhh Sunday Night” was replaced by “GAME ON!”

Let’s just say that NFL fans weren’t exactly thrilled with the new song.
