The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said Wednesday it is creating a new category to honor “achievement in popular film.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has had a big change of heart about the Oscar for popular achievement in film, which was announced last month to global criticism.
The controversial award is not going to be given out at the Oscars on Feb. 24 as planned. Instead, the group’s board of governors will continue to research the question of a popular-Oscar award.
“The Academy recognized that implementing any new award nine months into the year creates challenges for films that have already been released,” an academy release sent out Thursday stated. It promised to “examine and seek additional input regarding this category.”
“There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in the release.
Further changes to the 2019 Oscars will continue, including restructuring and shortening the telecast to three hours.
To honor all 24 award categories, six to eight categories will be presented live in the Dolby Theatre during commercial breaks. The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast.
Selected categories will be rotated each year, according to the release. The academy will collaborate with the show producers to select the categories.
